![]() I think more people would go in for exercising if the picture was a little less sweat and bounce at the gym and a little more wine glasses and girl talk around a fire pit. In fact, instead of getting together to train, we gathered for drinks a few nights before the “race.”įriends, this is how all exercise should be done. In the flurry of emails that went around from our team, I was relieved that lots of gals seemed to be choosing a lower key walking option, and I completely ignored the emails where people used words like “training” and “running.” Then I talked my daughter into doing it with me and signed us both up. So when my friend, Kyran, asked me if I wanted to participate with a group of bloggers in the Color Me Rad 5K, I was hesitant until I clarified that a) It was going to be more of a party than a race and b) I could walk instead of run. I will hike to the moon and back to see a pretty lake, but run on a treadmill? No way. If it involves special clothing or a trip to a store with the word “sports” in it, count me out. If it is not strolling around the lake or yoga, I can not be talked into doing it. In fact, if you have one of those stickers on the back of your car listing how many miles you ran in a marathon or a half marathon or a tri-something, well, hats off to you, but I have probably sneered at it.īecause I seriously hate any kind of exercise that involves things bouncing or jiggling. Granted, this is done on an industrial scale but it's all very safe and edible.Last Saturday I got to do the Color Me Rad 5K in Little Rock and it was SO MUCH FUN! The colors are made of good old fashioned corn starch and dyed with food coloring. Then, as runners cross the finish line, they all receive their own bag of color to participate in the Finale Color Throw as a group. At several places around the course, we build Color Stations where volunteers throw, spray or otherwise cover our runners in color. The colors are launched onto runners by an amazing corps of volunteers that we call the Color Bomb Squad. ![]() How do the colors work? What are they made of? We started with 35 events in our first year (2012), and grew to over 100 events in 20. We were already in the business of organizing 5k fun runs - The Dirty Dash - and saw the flying colors of the Holi festival as something many people would enjoy. The company founders and I attended the Festival of Colors at the local Hare Krishna temple over the course of our college years, and watched as it grew from 8,000 attendees to close to 80,000 attendees in just a few short years. It started in Utah, where, despite the predominantly Mormon population, one of the largest Holi Festivals in US takes place. The founding legend of Color Me Rad is, I think, a pretty cool story. Tell me a little bit about how Color Me Rad got started. I wanted to learn more about the race and how it works, so I reached out to Wyatt Grow, one of the organizers of the event, with a few questions. ![]() ![]() And for the last few summers, photos of smiling, color-streaked faces have been popping up on my Instagram and Facebook feed. On July 25th, Color Me Rad will be returning to the Red River Exhibition grounds once again. ![]()
